“Don’t be afraid to exercise regularly” those with osteoporosis advised
A new consensus statement from experts published in the British Journal of Sports Medicine advises those with osteoporosis not to be afraid to exercise regularly. The panel advise doing muscle strengthening exercises 2-3 days a week and moderate impact exercises on most days. For individuals with more serious osteoporosis including vertebral fractures they recommend impact exercise up to levels of brisk walking 20 minutes a day.
The experts report that individuals should be encouraged to exercise which can maximise bone health, prevent fracture risk and improve posture. The conclusion states that “Anyone who is new to regular physical activity or is worried about their technique or unsure how to build their fitness, can seek advice from any trained exercise instructor. Those with a history of falls or serious concerns about their balance can contact their local falls service.”
