Metabolic health v a calorie only focus
Researchers in a Lancet Diabetes & Endocrinology paper recommend that health professionals should spend more efforts looking at other health markers that promote metabolically healthy obesity rather than recommending individuals lose weight focusing solely on calorie intake and weight loss. It is widely accepted that health markers such as attaining normal cholesterol levels, blood sugar and blood pressure result from healthy eating patterns, increased physical activity and a healthy moderate consistent weight loss.
The researchers report that while individuals with metabolically healthy obesity face a greater risk of cardiovascular events than their counterparts at normal weights, their risk is substantially lower than that of people with metabolically unhealthy obesity.
