Beneficial gut bacteria inhibits Salmonella and E. coli
New research published in the journal Nature by the University of California provides the first scientific evidence that small protein molecules known as microcins, produced by beneficial gut microbes help block disease causing bacteria in inflamed intestines. The researchers discovered a probiotic strain of E. coli inhibits the pathogen Salmonella and an invasive form of E. coli. More research will now be done to see if a simple, natural probiotic could be administered to prevent illnesses from Salmonella and E. coli in the future.
