Compound discovered in blueberries may help treat inflammatory disorders
A team of scientists at the Tokyo University of Science have discovered a polyphenolic compound known as pterostilbene (PSB) in blueberries. Polyphenols are high in antioxidants and beneficial to human health. Similar to another well known compound resveratrol, long recognised for numerous benefits to health, pterostilbene was found to have strong immunosuppressive properties which researchers believe could go on to develop new therapeutic options including drugs in the treatment of chronic inflammatory disorders.
Further research is now underway, for now it might make sense for us all to remember to add blueberries to our breakfast bowls, porridge and even our plant protein smoothies!
NOTE: The research is published in The FASEB journal, published by the Federation of American Societies for Experimental Biology.
