Peptide in beetroot could be developed into medicine to treat inflammatory diseases
Researchers at MedUni, Vienna’s Institute of Pharmacology have isolated a peptide from beetroot that is able to inhibit an enzyme that breaks down a messenger molecule linked to inflammatory responses in the body. The researchers hope this will lead to the development of drugs to help in the treatment of inflammatory diseases including autoimmune and neurodegenerative diseases.
According to the researchers, the peptide was also found in commercially available beetroot juice (obviously in lower concentrations than any drug would be). With this in mind as we head into winter it might be a great idea to add beetroot to delicious warming stews and soups, with numerous health benefits already widely known including improved blood flow and helping to lower blood pressure for those with high blood pressure, beetroot is a great source of fibre, potassium and Vitamins A and C.
