Scientists have just discovered that the gut is a source of blood cells

Until recently scientists believed that all blood cells were created exclusively in bone marrow.  An exciting new discovery from researchers at Columbia University Vagelos College of Physicians and Surgeons, described as ‘groundbreaking’ reveals that the gut provides up to 10% of blood cells in circulation from its own reservoir of blood forming stem cells.
