Mental and physical health benefits for older people living close to green and blue spaces in urban areas

Research from more than 42,000 people aged over 65 living in urban areas of Washington state found significant health benefits for those living close to both green and blue spaces. The study from Washington State University, published in the journal Health and Place found that even small differences in the availability of these spaces improved the mental and physical health of older people. The study found that just 10% more green or blue space including, tree cover, water bodies, trail length and forest in a person’s ZIP code was associated with reduced serious psychological distress and other mental health problems. Similarly a 10% increase in green and blue space increased the general health of individuals.
