Mindfulness for improving body image

Mindfulness for improving body image

Mindfulness is a focus on one’s thoughts, emotions and physical sensations in the present moment.

Mindfulness practice can help nurture greater awareness towards our emotions and feelings in the present moment which can help to reduce critical judgement regarding appearance, directed towards oneself or towards others.

Focusing too much on body image and the feelings that can surface often leads to a cycle of negative thoughts. Mindfulness can be a powerful tool for breaking free from this pattern by promoting awareness of thought patterns and even triggers.

Mindfulness practice can be done anywhere and can take many forms

  • Walking whilst listening to the sounds of nature, noticing the air, rain or sunshine can all help us to feel connected to the natural world around us

  • Sitting either in meditation or just sitting taking note of one’s breath and surroundings

  • Daily chores like washing the dishes or sweeping the path. You don’t have to be a Zen master to be aware of the present even in the mundane

NOTE: If you are struggling with body image and/or eating disorders always seek treatment and counselling. Opening up to someone you trust, talking about a problem or sharing a worry can help. For some talking to a professional like a GP is beneficial or contacting Beat ( Beat eating disorders) the UK’s leading charity supporting those affected by eating disorders.
