Brain health boosted by exercise

A new international study led by experts from Providence Saint John’s Pacific Neuroscience Institute brain health centre published in the Journal of Alzheimer’s Disease found that physical activity is linked to an increase in the size of brain areas important for memory and learning.

The study looked at MRI brain scans from 10,125 people and found that those who regularly engaged in exercises like walking, running and other sports had larger brain volumes in important areas of the brain. This included grey matter which helps with processing information and white matter which helps to connect different brain regions especially the hippocampus which is important for memory.
