The World Health Organization have released and updated key facts regarding air quality and health.  The WHO reports that more than 9 out of every 10 people on the planet live in areas where air pollution breaches safety limits.  Dr Maria Neira, director of public health at the WHO said "To date, air pollution, both ambient (outdoor) and household (indoor) is the biggest environmental risk to health.  Ambient air pollution alone kills 3 million people each year".

The WHO report that by reducing air pollution levels countries can reduce the burden of disease from stroke, heart disease, lung cancer and chronic or acute respiratory diseases including asthma.
